Basic Information
Lactobacillus acidophilus is gram-positive, rod shaped, and often found in the small intestine. It produces lactic acid, acetic acid and antibiotics which protect against harmful bacteria. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a homofermentative, microaerophilic species, fermenting sugars into lactic acid, and grows readily at rather low pH values (below pH 5.0) and has an optimum growth temperature of around 37℃. Lactobacillus acidophilus occurs naturally in the human and animal gastrointestinal tract and mouth, urinary tract, it can also be found and applicated in various fermented foods.

🔬 It can grow in both oxygen-present or oxygen-absent environments, grows better under aerobic conditions, and can even survive in Nitrogen Dioxide conditions. Its metabolism can digest monosaccharides and also creates lactase — an enzyme that converts lactose (milk sugar) into a simple sugar.
