Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is a Gram-positive anaerobic rod-shaped bacterium which can be found in the large intestines of most mammals, including humans. Bifidobacterium animalis include two sub-species: Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. animalis (B.animalis) and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (B.lactis) were previously described as two distinct species.
Since Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is extracted from healthy human gut flora, it naturally resists acid, bile salt and synthetic digestive juice. It also strongly adheres to the intestinal tract epithelium, helps to strengthen immunity and maintains the gut flora balance.
Bifidobacterium animalis (include B.animalis and B.lactis) is the most popular used probiotic bacteria belongs to Bifidobacterium spp. They colonize the human gastrointestinal tract — representing up to 90% of the bacteria of an infant's GI tract — then gradually reduce to ~3% as other enteric bacteria such as Bacteroides and Eubacterium begin to dominate.
