Basic Information
Lactobacillus acidophilus is gram-positive, rod shaped, and often found in the small intestine. It produces lactic acid, acetic acid and antibiotics which protect against harmful bacteria. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a homofermentative, microaerophilic species, fermenting sugars into lactic acid, and grows readily at rather low pH values (below pH 5.0) and has an optimum growth temperature of around 37℃. Lactobacillus acidophilus occurs naturally in the human and animal gastrointestinal tract and mouth, urinary tract, it can also be found and applicated in various fermented foods.
Lactobacillus acidophilus has a super strong ability to survive in the gastro-acid (low pH), bile salt, and enzyme digestion pressure conditions, for colonizing in the human epithelial cell lines and human intestinal mucus. It has the typical characters of Lactic Acid Bacteria — producing Lactic Acid, Acetic Acid, and natural anti-microbial compounds like acidolin, acidophilin, and aetocidon to inhibit the growth of other bacteria.
It can grow in both oxygen-residual or oxygen-free environments, grows better under aerobic conditions, and can even survive in Nitrogen Dioxide conditions. Its metabolism can digest monosaccharides, and it can also create lactase — an enzyme that converts lactose (milk sugar) into a simple sugar.
